Did the old doomsayer die and his legacy was passed on to this guy?

The change of doomsayer may be a reference to the change of artist.

or it might just be a regional thing, one Doomsayer per village & whatnot. Who knows, maybe they’re unionized, & have gotten the briefings on the local bustier than average (seriously, they seem to be getting bigger every time we see her) & her Knight.

It might be the old guy’s son.

He is sort of carrying on the tradition of being where he is not suppose to be and annoying the Princess.

Yes, except THIS time, she CAN lock him up in the dungeon without giving him the opportunity to SPEECH because he’s in the princess’ quarters during a time of emergency without permission.

She could also have him executed if he resists.

Actually, they’re both in the throne room, which is a semi-public space. However, when Daddy’s away, Peonie’s currently the next in line. If she wants to take responsibility for beheading him, she only has to answer to her father. Aren’t classical monarchies great?

As for the new Doomsayer, I have to agree with Rukh. The new artist is ‘cleaning house’, kicking out the unreliables and replacing them with his lackeys. Can’t be regional – we last saw the ‘old guy’ doomsayer right here in the capital. His (grand?)daughter works in the palace, remember.

A new replacement for the old man? I guess they needed a new narrative voice.

The new doomsayer is a usurper! I say all of his fans rally around the old man and lynch this imposter!

    Waits.

    Keeps waiting…

Did the old man have any fans?

I just assume that dramatic narration is a common hobby in worlds like this.

I presume that it’s like Piers Anthony’s “Incarnations of Immortality” series, in which Death, Time, Nature, Good, Evil, et cetera, are not persons, but offices. For instance, at the start of the first book, “On A Pale Horse,” the hero becomes Death, scythe and all. So I figure that in Exiern, Doomsayer is an office. All hail the newb Doomsayer!

I’m pretty sure that the last we saw of the old man, he was being carted off to the cells or dungeon. Maybe they’ll both meet?

This isn’t some silly democracy and based on voting situation. King is the ruler and if he wants to execute someone, then he simply does. Same goes for Peonie in this case (especially since her daddy would not care about some “random Doomsayer”), she can just get the fella thrown in jail and then executed whenever.

Actually, when they were having the return parade, Peonie was complaining that she couldn’t order people to do stuff like that cause of their constitution, or whatever they call it. So the place is more like a constitutional monarchy, but one that isn’t just ceremonial like England’s.
